In collaboration with my colleague, Eleanor Stubbs, I undertook the task of enhancing the CNN audience's experience with the British royal family tree. The goal was to create an engaging and captivating interactive representation of the British monarchy, spanning from Queen Elizabeth II to the latest addition to the royal family.
Drawing inspiration from Eleanor's concept, the family tree to resembles a train map module. This approach aimed to bring a sense of delight and curiosity to the audience. To add value and entertainment, we incorporated features such as 'succession,' 'timeline,' and a 'quiz' section.
The 'succession' and 'timeline' segments utilized elements like animated numbers and portrayed the aging of monarchs as time passed, while the 'quiz' section allowed the audience to test their knowledge of the royal family. This interactive experience was closely tied to news events including the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and the enthronement of King Charles III.

In the early stages of the project, I commenced by analysing some of the pain points from the previous family tree experience. Given the vast scope of the family tree and the spatial constraints, particularly in the context of mobile usage, users encountered difficulties in tracking the relationships between monarchs. This hindered the family tree's ability to fulfil its original informative purposes, primarily due to the extensive scrolling required.
These challenges stimulated various discussions during the brainstorming phase. As a team, we explored ideas aimed at enhancing user engagement and prolonging their interactions with the family tree experience. Our objective was to address their curiosity by presenting the line of succession and the connections between lesser-known monarchs and the king or queen, the birth and death of monarchs and much more, in a user-friendly manner.

In the subsequent phases, we outlined the user flow, building upon our conceptual ideas. This encompassed the development of four distinct interactive sections starting from the homepage, with a clear connection to the identified pain points or positive enhancements stemming from our initial concepts. Following the wireframing and the establishment of our general user flow, we engaged in multiple iterative phases of wireframe refinement and prototype development.
