CNN As equals, ‘I would whiten my skin no matter the cost’︎︎︎
PROJECT DETAILS
︎︎︎ROLE: LEAD DESIGNER/BRAINSTORMING, WIREFRAME, PROTOTYPE
While working as an associate designer at CNN, I had the opportunity to design the final story for the 'As Equals: White Lies' series. 'As Equals' is a CNN series dedicated to exposing systemic gender inequality. The 'White Lies' stories within this series delve into the global practice of skin whitening, aiming to unveil the root causes of colorism, the industries profiting from it, and the toll it takes on individuals and communities.

One of the interactive stories in this series, 'I Would Whiten My Skin No Matter the Cost,' presents multiple testimonials from CNN readers around the world, shedding light on the pressures associated with skin whitening.
As a visual storyteller, I took the lead in conceptualizing, wireframing, and prototyping the interactive experience for this story. This collaborative effort involved working closely with the CNN motion team, 'As Equals' editors, and an in-house developer to bring this compelling narrative to life.

I initiated the project by brainstorming key concepts and aligning them with the editor's specific requirements. A critical aspect of the project was the categorisation of testimonies into six distinct themes, enabling the creation of a coherent narrative while highlighting their individual characteristics. Furthermore, we aimed to offer users the flexibility to explore stories either on a global scale or within specific themes.
With the visual editor in the team, I took the concept to the next level by introducing circles as an organic visual language to define the story's unique identity. Each circle symbolises an individual testimony, and these circles seamlessly converge to form a cohesive illustration that embodies a particular theme. Additionally, these circles serve as interactive elements, allowing users to access individual stories by clicking on them.
In order to make this concept more tangible, I crafted a comprehensive user flow chart, which was subsequently refined through the creation of low-fidelity wireframes. These wireframes were instrumental in helping us understand the core steps of the interactive user experience
